Quirky Quarks

Writer's picture: Lee WinderLee Winder

I stumbled upon Quirky Quarks at UKGE as I strolled by AJ rocking a flashy pink faux fur jacket, being interviewed about the game. I just had to go and say hello!

Quirky Quarks is a set building / bidding game where players are aiming to create atomic structures by building up collections of particles that come together to create the structure they need (I apologise to any physicist reading this if my terminology is complete nonsense!).

Components, Components

Quirky Quarks is a very well made game - and that's an understatement. The quality of the components, from the dual layer board, the scientist meeples and the metal (yes, actual metal) coins screams quality and needed to be a focus of the shoot.

I really wanted people to see how well built this was and how good the components looked. By pulling in close to the coins, and the meeples, but then giving a broad look at what comes in the box really gives the player an idea of the quality they'll be buying into.

This really set the scene of how well constructed the game is, and how much care and attention has gone into making it something people will be able to roll around in their hands as they play.

The game comes with a lot of cards - the number of quests and possible combinations of particles is significant, and it would have be remiss of me not to take one of my favourite kinds of shots to show this off.

The Science

Obviously a shoot of a boardgame about particle physics has to have a focus on science - that should go without saying. The game even comes with a "Science Behind" book that helps players understand the fundamentals of the particle physics, something which I absolutely devoured and I think is a great way to get (especially younger) players engaged in the topic.

(My foray into science ended with an "unclassified" grade in Biology at A-Level... It was not my strongest subject!)

AJ really wanted to highlight the Science Behind book, so I couldn't think of a better way that to create a scene where the Science meeples are stood around discussing their latest findings - even giving the impression they are looking downwards towards the text.

I also wanted the idea of something happening off-scene, a reaction behind the scientists as they look up, unaware of what is happening behind them. I love this shot - the way the light cuts between the scientists, casting harsh shadows as the reaction behind them blows out the scene.

Quote - We would absolutely recommend Rising Dice to anyone looking for photographs for their board game
