Perilous Pond

Writer's picture: Lee WinderLee Winder

Perilous Pond is a push your luck dice game from Frozen Maze games, where the aim is to be the frog with the most fireflies, while avoiding falling into the pond or being scared by the dangerous pike.

Gameplay Shoots

Frozen Maze were eager to get a number of gameplay shots, focusing on the game being played especially with in-action shots of players hands. One of the things I really liked about the game was the cute, quality meeples for the player, and the custom dice, so I made sure they were the focus on the closer in shoots.

For the more gameplay oriented images, I wanted to make sure there was a story to the dice, so for each one the meeples were positioned in a way that the shown dice would have a clear impact on the game. For example, the blue player rolling a tongue side, showing they can push the red player into the pond, or the red player rolling a white pike, meaning the pike next to them was about to scare them. It's a small detail that players who haven't played the game before might not notice, but those who have will.

With hand shots, you have to be careful not to overshadow the game - after all the players are buying the game, not the hand to play it with! So with these I pushed the hands to the side of the frame and made sure they were pointing or interacting clearly with the game components, so the meeples are still the centre of attention.

And, with any good dice based game, we need the action shot... But making sure it's still respecting how the game plays - in this case re-rolling the dice but keeping the pike roll from the previous one.

A Quick Focus on the Art

The art in Perilous Pond is lovely, it has a real charm to it that I wanted to make sure we a call out. While the art on the cards and box were shown in other images it wasn't the centre of attention, so we added a few pack shots to the shoot to ensure we could really show it off.
