Pencil Book Quest

Pencil Book Quest is a solo, pencil-and-paper adventure designed to be played anywhere, with a rather lovely pencil that also functions as a dice!

It was the "play anywhere" nature of the game that I really wanted to lean into with this one, as it really is something you can drop in your back and pull out whenever you have 10 minutes to play.

Persuading a nearly 13 year old to walk around a park and have her picture taken while playing Pencil Book Quest wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, though the demand was that we had to do it in a park in another town.

On Location

There were two key things I wanted to highlight with this location shoot. The first was the ability to play the game anywhere, regardless of what you had with you, and secondly the way in which you could just carry it around with you.

The first needed a bit of scouting to get the right location, not every park bench is perfect for a photo. We also needed the wind going in the right direction so the hair fell just right!

Showing the ability to just sit down in a park or pull the game out or being able to play it against a randomly placed giant boulder you happen to come across really helped showcase how easy it was to play.

I also wanted to give a bit of a summer vibe to these images, the idea of sitting in the park on a warm summers day, not a care in the world... So by adding some additional warmth to the image in post-processing really gave a relaxing feel to them.

But I also needed to show how easy it was to just carry the game with you. A quick drop in a pocket, or stopping to watch something with it in your hand showcased just how easy it is to carry the game around.

It took more shots than I'd like to admit to get the right amount of walking, but not walking to fast, but looking natural while doing it that I was going for!

I think these shots really show off how easy it is to just have the game on you at all times, something Grumpy Spider Games was really going for.

If you read this when it's published, Pencil Book Quest is currently on Kickstarter if you'd like to take a closer look and back it!
